The tutors engage students in conversation, to help them brainstorm topics, create outlines, round out first drafts, and revise complete drafts. The tutors will focus, at first, on “global issues”, the establishment of a central idea, for example, an organizational strategy, supporting detail, and clarity. Tutors may also counsel students on “local issues”, such as sentence structure, word choice, and grammar. While tutors will not proofread or edit papers, they can offer students proofreading and editing strategies.
Writing Studio tutors will assist students on an array of products, including any written assignment for any MICA course, artist statements, cover letters, resumes, and grant applications. The Writing Studio maintains a tradition of welcoming students for whom English is a second language. Tutors will aid ESL students with their writing and also with conversational English. Some ESL students struggle with presentations and critiques, for example, and tutors may aid in alleviating some of those challenges.
The Writing Studio staff may, upon request, visit classrooms or host classes at the Writing Studio for brief informational presentations. The Studio encourages a dialogue with faculty members who anticipate the need for many of their students to seek tutoring appointments throughout the term. In particular, the Studio seeks collaborative relationships with professors who may be interested in adding modules on the writing process into their course plans or requiring a writing component for senior thesis projects.
The Writing Studio is committed to the growth of compositional skills for all students enrolled at MICA and is dedicated to aiding them in meeting the writing requirements for all their courses, studio art and academic subjects alike. In Fall 2008, the Writing Studio set in-house records by meeting with 291 individual students and conducting 1,489 tutoring sessions. Come visit us in Bunting 452. We look forward to meeting you and assisting you with your academic pursuits.
