The Washington Post features MICA alumni group Baltimore Development Cooperative (BDC), which stimulates community formation and social change through the group's Stew dinners. MICA faculty member Hugh Pocock is also highlighted for his sustainability classes, inspired by BDC.

MICA Explores Intolerance Through "The Narcissism of Minor Differences," Dec. 9–March 13

MICA will host "The Narcissism of Minor Differences," an exhibition showcasing 17 acclaimed artists, including Francisco de Goya, Philip Guston and Sam Durant, who will explore the dark side of intolerance using art, historical artifact and documentation.

Community Arts Convening and Research Project: Call for Proposals

Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks applications for three to four writing group fellowships to participate in the 2010-2011 Community Arts Convening and Research Project. The Convening and Research Project is funded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation and sponsored by MICA. It is guided by the vision that community-grounded arts and culture enhance the well-being, development, empowerment, and voice of disenfranchised communities. The Project provides a platform for college and university faculty and students; community-based practitioners; and community scholars, leaders, and youth to meet and generate new ideas; share resources and models for best practices in the field; reflect new curricula and pedagogy; define and solve problems; develop action plans; identify and conduct new research; develop leadership in the field, and cultivate new partnerships.

Project-Based MICA Course Sends Students Out into the Community

MICA’s prolific outreach into the community was expanded upon this past spring semester as 16 students opted for a one-time project-based course aimed at designing, printing and embroidering commemorative fabrics for Christ the King Presbyterian Church of Maryland’s 10th anniversary celebration on Sunday, July 18, which is open to the community to attend.

MICA Faculty's Documentary Wins an Oscar
Chair of video & film arts department, alumni and students helped create "Music by Prudence," a documentary short subject film that won an Oscar this year. The Maryland Film Festival screened the documentary on May 7 and 9, and HBO2 aired the documentary throughout the week of May 12. Media coverage of "Music by Prudence," and MICA's connections to the documentary, has ranged from international press to social networking posts.
