A Campus and City for Artists and Designers
Baltimore is a city of 100,000 college students, including graduate students from around the country studying law, medicine, creative writing, engineering, architecture, music, theatre, business, and a range of liberal arts subjects at The Johns Hopkins University, the University of Baltimore, the University of Maryland, UMBC, and Goucher College, among others.
Graduate students at MICA study in the heart of Baltimore's cultural district, on a campus that features award-winning new construction and creatively renovated existing structures, all planned to meet the needs of artists. They have access to dedicated space appropriate to their needs, including expansive studios. MICA also offers one of the best visual libraries in the nation and an advanced Graduate Research Lab, along with computers, servers, and equipment that are continually upgraded to serve artists working at an advanced level. The College's Graduate Studio Center anchors the Station North Arts & Entertainment District, home to the Maryland Film Festival and the Transmodern Festival, as well as critically acclaimed theater companies, galleries, and performance venues for the city's nationally-recognized music scene.
MICA's graduate students are only 40 minutes by train from Washington, D.C., and three hours from New York; Baltimore itself, home to internationally known museums, independent galleries, and innovative arts institutions, is an outstanding place to build regional exhibition experience; The Contemporary Museum, Creative Alliance, Maryland Art Place, School 33 Art Center, and an expanding array of galleries-many founded and run by MICA alumni-provide valuable exhibition opportunities.
Outstanding on-campus exhibition opportunities a hallmark of the MICA graduate program, as is professional development embedded within the graduate curriculum. Graduate students can also take advantage of the innovative services and programs offered through the Joseph Meyerhoff Center for Career Development, which has had outstanding success supporting applicants for prestigious grants and awards-including Fulbright and Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA grants. The College also prepares graduate students for academic careers though a unique certificate developed by out nationally renowned Center for Art Education. The certificate is earned though coursework and work as a graduate teaching intern; the graduate internship allows you to earn hands-on experience in a number of ways, including teaching in MICA's undergraduate program under a faculty member; offering workshops in your area of technical mastery; and working as a graduate program assistant.
