BALTIMORE--Hidden & Revealed, an exhibition that provides insight into an artist's process, is on view through Saturday, Sept. 6 at Maryland Art Place, Suite 100, 8 Market Place.
Curated by Peter Dubeau, associate dean for continuing studies at MICA, Hidden & Revealed features the work of six artists, including Michelle La Perriere ('89 MFA), co-chair of the foundation department at the College; Hadieh Shafie, director of career development; and Randi Reiss-McCormack ('89 MFA).
A free, public gallery talk with Dubeau takes place Friday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. followed by a reception with the artists at 7 p.m. at the non-profit center for contemporary art.
La Perriere's selection of work is from a larger series of sequential monoprints that was created during a residency in which the artist's experience of watching spring come alive from her studio window was tempered by the remembrance of her brother who had suddenly passed away.
Reiss-McCormack has loosely based her three new mixed media paintings on nursery rhyme narratives and has chosen to present them in a circular format that recalls a spinning top.
Shafie uses Farsi text -- specifically the word for "love" -- but strips it of its meaning and sound as it becomes more of a calligraphic mark in her new series of paintings and mixed media works.
The other artists participating in Hidden & Revealed are Michael Iampieri, Kevin Kepple, and Dean Kessmann.
