In the last two decades, there has been much excitement about and development in the ‘creative industries' and a greater appreciation of the role of creative professionals in a changing new economy.

    MICA, NAEA Present Educator Conference About New Directions in African American Art, Nov. 11–14

    Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA)’s Center for Race and Culture (CRC) will host THINK TANK–2010 and Beyond: New Directions in African American Art - Transformative Aesthetic Curriculum Design, Thursday, Nov. 11–Sunday, Nov. 14 in MICA’s Falvey Hall, located in the Brown Center, 1301 W. Mount Royal Ave. The conference is a professional development opportunity for higher education and K-12 educators with a focus on interdisciplinary approaches. It is part of an initiative sponsored by the MICA’s CRC in conjunction with the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Issues Group, Committee on Multiethnic Concerns.

  2. Community Arts Convening and Research Project: Call for Proposals

    Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) seeks applications for three to four writing group fellowships to participate in the 2010-2011 Community Arts Convening and Research Project. The Convening and Research Project is funded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation and sponsored by MICA. It is guided by the vision that community-grounded arts and culture enhance the well-being, development, empowerment, and voice of disenfranchised communities. The Project provides a platform for college and university faculty and students; community-based practitioners; and community scholars, leaders, and youth to meet and generate new ideas; share resources and models for best practices in the field; reflect new curricula and pedagogy; define and solve problems; develop action plans; identify and conduct new research; develop leadership in the field, and cultivate new partnerships.

    MICA’s Center for Design Thinking Publishes Its Fourth Book, 'Exploring Materials: Creative Design for Everyday Objects'

    MICA and Princeton Architectural Press celebrate their new book, 'Exploring Materials,' with a book signing and reception on Thursday, March 11, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Brown Center's Leidy Atrium. The book, authored by MICA's M.F.A. in Graphic Design program Director Ellen Lupton and environmental design faculty member Inna Alesina, features dozens of MICA students' work in the environmental design program. 'Exploring Materials' is scheduled to be officially released on Thursday, April 1.

    MICA was pleased to host Transformations October 22-25, 2009, as the official launch of the new Center for Race and Culture (CRC), an interactive Center for research to investigate the dynamics of race, culture and it's relationship to art-makings, traditions and practice.
